Approach

Dr. Laura Holdcraft, Ph.D.
My therapy approach and training is in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This is the most widely studied therapy with the best evidence behind it for the treatment of many psychological disorders. As a CBT therapist, I help clients learn about how thoughts and behaviors influence emotions. Unhealthy or irrational thinking is usually present when one is struggling with an anxiety or depressive disorder. Through CBT, individuals learn how to recognize typical thought patterns that feed into anxiety and depression. There are many effective CBT methods for challenging unhealthy thinking that I teach and help clients apply to their daily lives. Behaviors can also influence emotions, negatively or positively. Behavioral interventions include identifying and recording unwanted or self-defeating behaviors, learning how to use healthy alternatives, and behavior modification principles such as changing the consequences that keep undesirable behaviors in place.

Dr. Holdcraft focuses on using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy methods to assist clients to:
  • Experience increased relief from emotional suffering
  • Change dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors
  • Gain more self-control
  • Build inner strength and self-confidence

Therapeutic Style

I feel it is important to create a unique therapy experience for every client I see. I have received feedback that one of my strengths as a therapist is an ability to put clients at ease. Clients tend to appreciate my sense of humor, my warm and caring style, and my ability to speak in clear terms. My clients and the parents of my clients have commented that it is easy to develop a sense of connection with me and that they feel truly understood, which I believe is integral to the therapy process.  I offer honest feedback, practical solutions, and training in skills that have been shown to be effective for many individuals.

Most clients find it easy to talk to me, feel that I create a non-judgmental space for airing personal concerns, and tell me that I am highly intuitive and empathetic. I strive to create a balance between offering my clinically-informed feedback and helping you learn how to find your own inner wisdom and strength.  I genuinely care about the well-being of my clients and it is truly rewarding to help my clients develop insight into their own negative thoughts and ineffective behaviors and make changes that lead to symptom relief and healthier lives.
